Whether you’ve just moved into a new place or are simply refreshing your current home, it’s important to get the right window treatments. At Advanced Window Fashions, we’re here to help you avoid some very common mishaps when purchasing new window treatments.
You may feel overwhelmed by the wealth of decisions—we offer many different styles, colors, and fabrics—but there are certain mistakes to avoid regardless of which type of covering you decide to go with.
The first mistake many people make is getting the measurements wrong. There is no such thing as a “standard” size window, so each window will need to be measured individually. You will need to know if you will be going with an inside or outside mount, as well. Measure each window across the top, the middle, and the bottom of the frame and go with the smallest number. Customer measurements are great for the initial quoting process, and our professional and certified sales representatives conduct final measurements to ensure the product is ordered correctly.
Many people also choose the wrong material. You may be in love with natural hardwood window blinds, but they are not the best choice for bathrooms or kitchens. Hardwood is not only susceptible to moisture damage, but its porous nature will absorb odors and nobody wants to have stinky window coverings. The good news is that faux wood is an awesome alternative and can be used in any area of your home.
You may think there’s little difference between an inside and outside mount. There is a difference, and it matters. The depth of the window is a primary factor in this decision, but it’s also one of preference and aesthetics. Inside mounts fit tightly within the window and are a great choice for treatments like roller shades and Roman shades like Solera® Soft Shades. Outside mounts make windows, and rooms in general, appear larger. If you’re thinking about traditional drapery, we highly recommend an outside mount so the stack back doesn’t take away from your view of the outdoors.
Sometimes, you may think it’s easiest to just leave your windows bare. Trust us, that is never the best option. Granted, your household can run without window treatments, but why would you want it to? Window coverings provide privacy, protection from UV rays, and many provide a layer of insulation at your window. This can save you money on energy costs over time, so consider the right window treatments to be an investment!
One last bit of advice is to keep your home’s curb appeal in mind. Your windows may look amazing from the inside, but if your window treatments are mismatched or clash with the color of your house it will make your house stand out in a negative way. Be sure to take a look at how your old windows look from the outside compared to your brand new ones.
